Wasn't prolonged?: Here's a helpful link. FYI, Barcode scanners are listed as an FDA Class II ("Hazard increases when viewed directly for long periods of time.") http://www.fda.gov/Radiation-EmittingProducts/RadiationEmittingProductsandProcedures/HomeBusinessandEntertainment/LaserProductsandInstruments. Depends: The scanner may or may not use laser light. Laser light can be harmful to your eye. The exposure may not of been that much. You can discuss with your ophthalmologist

Common sense says no: Look at it this way. There must be hundreds of thousands (millions?) of scanners in use in the US. Millions of workers and customers use them and sometimes must briefly look straight into them. If you owned a company making scanners, would you market a product that causes significant harm? Of course not. The scanner wouldn't be used, or you'd be sued. Your company would quickly go out of business.
