Hairy tongue: Hairy tongue results when projections on the tongue called papillae grow longer and don't shed like normal. This makes the tongue appear hairy. Debris, bacteria or other organisms can collect on these papillae and result in brown or black appearance. Use a tongue scraper daily. Itchy gum can be from any number of sources and would need to be looked at by your dentist if persists for more than two weeks.
