Depends on the cause: Often jaundice is caused by viral infection. Avoiding bodily fluids of infected people & dirty needles can help prevent some types of hepatitis. In other cases, jaundice can be due to exposure to liver toxins, eg, and evaluation by a GI doctor will be needed to determine what can be done to avoid problems. If pregnant women get conditions of the liver, they can be referred to mfm specialist first.

Depends on cause: It is not normal for a mother to develop jaundice during pregnancy. Causes include: reactivation or exacerbation of a viral hepatitis carrier state, gallstones, autoimmune hepatitis or more seriously, pre-eclamptic liver disease and hellp syndrome. In some cases, this may be a relatively benign form of jaundice, called intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy. Thus the cause must be determined.
