Is "icy hot" effective for helping pulled muscles heal faster, or does it just mask the pain? do you recommend it ?

Pain: It does not help muscles "heal faster" but can potentially help with pain and swelling following an injury.

It feels better.: The only thing that will cause healing your body's response to tissue damage. Icy hot may make the area feel better for a while, but healing is controlled by oxygen, amino acids, sugar and protein synthesis.
