Chemical confusion: Icy hot formulations include fda permitted active ingredients to relieve minor pain. Icy hot products contain menthol or a combination of menthol and methyl salicylate. Menthol is a substance which triggers the cold-sensitive nerves in the skin, cold decreases pain perception. Methyl salicylate (oil of wintergreen or wintergreen oil) is a cousin of aspirin.
