Present for months?: If this is a long-term problem, then the cause is usually an irritant response to hygiene products or to shaving. Sometimes one develops allergic sensitivity to hygiene products, commonly a preservative used in the product, and patch testing may identify the culprit. In rare cases, the ointment used for treatment may contain the same preservative.
