A normal level: of bilirubin in the blood is < 1.0 mg/dL Jaundice may be seen when bilirubin exceeds 2-3 mg/dL (not 0.3). The level at which stool color is affected is much more variable, I believe. The presence of bilirubin in bile is generally responsible for stool color and can vary from light yellow to almost black. As bilirubin in the blood rises, you will likely see the stool darken.
