Timing: A false negative result may be from mislabeld blood specimen, lab error, or timing of the test. Thus you will need to know all these facts. On the other hand, everything else being equal, if the suspicion of the disease condition is high but you have a negative test result. it is often necessary to have the test repeated in the absence of another explanation.

Just one: Number of tests doesn't matter. Once you have had a 4th generation (antigen-antibody, "duo") test more than 4-6 weeks after exposure, or an antibody-only test at 6 weeks or more, you can rely 100% on the result, no matter how concerned you are. False negatives do not occur: it is not possible to have HIV with negative results on these tests at these times. Believe it.
