Doctor can check: A very sore throat can be evaluated by a primary care doctor or an ear-nose-throat doctor to see what the cause might be. Sometimes it is a strep throat bacterial infection (antibiotics would be needed to treat strep). Other possibilities include a tonsillar abscess, a viral infection, a throat ulcer, etc... The doctor has to look at the ear and the throat to figure out what is going on.
