Chondromalacia: generally affects the UNDERSURFACE of the Patella (Knee Cap) and pivoting etc involves complex patella "tracking" along with the Quadriceps musculature. Hope this is helpful! Dr Z

Rough surface: In a normal joint, two smooth cartilage surfaces glide over each other allowing for smooth, gliding motion. In chondromalacia, those smooth surfaces have become rough and irregular. This can cause pain and popping and crunching sounds as the joint goes through motion, this is known as crepitance. Don't hesitate to see a specialist to discuss treatment options.
