Hyperprolactinemia: Non pregnancy/breastfeeding reasons for high prolactin levels can be due to pituitary secreting excess prolactin (idiopathic prolactinemia), liver disease (cirrhosis), kidney disease, hypothyroidism, chest trauma and stress. Medications can also increase prolactin including psychiatric and gastrointestinal drugs. Estrogens and verapamil can also elevate prolactin levels.
