A member asked:

Could a urine m/c/s identify a particular infection that two blood cultures may fail to identify in a case of suspected sepsis. is this very unlikely?

Good idea : I'm not licensed to practice in Australia however: It may well be worth checking as part of a set of tests for sepsis to identify where it is coming from and I would often do in similar situations. Don't always grow something on the blood culture. For specific advice I'd discuss this suggestion with the doctor looking after the case but if not checked this may be an appropriate test to do

If the source of the: sepsis is the urinary tract (kidneys and bladder primarily), then urine c/s might identify the cause of sepsis and the best antibiotic to treat it. Kidney infection is a common cause of sepsis in certain groups of people. If the source of the infection is elsewhere, then urine c/s won't identify the cause unless the sepsis has spread from the bloodstream to the kidneys. Dr. Anne

URI sepsis: Yes. Rip roaring bladder infection can look like sepsis. And the UTI will not show up in the blood.
