After "catching" HIV infection, 98% of individuals will have a positive test at 4 weeks. Not bad, but "official" guidelines say that is not good enough. At 3 months 99.9% of individuals will have a positive test. Therefore "official" recommendations are to test at 4 wks and 3 months to identify those last 2% that may have been missed the first time
