A member asked:

Hi. how accurate/conclusive is a negative result of hiv rna (early detection test) taken 4 weeks post exposure? my exposure was pretty low risk as told to me by my doctors. i will obviously be taking other follow up tests as time goes by. thank you.

New generation ELISA: The new fourth generation ELISA test is very accurate within the first 4 weeks and picks up almost all positive seroconversions in that time frame. It would make sense to get another test for follow up.

Almost 100%: Your "obviously" comment is based on a misconception. RNA testing alone is nearly 100% accurate at 4 weeks. If you also have (or had) a negative antibody test, the results are (or will be) conclusive. The duo test (antibody/antigen) or RNA plus an antibody test are 100% conlcusve at 4 weeks. Going beyond 4 weeks is needed only for stand-alone antibody tests -- and even then, 6-8 weeks is enough.
