Orthopedic surgeon: Swelling and soreness of the knee without a history of injury may be due to arthritis, cartilage damage or ligament damage. An orthopedic surgeon is best qualified to examine you for diagnosis and treatment. Any appropriate studies such as an xray or knee mri may be ordered. Anti-inflammatory medications and or physical therapy may be prescribed.

Swollen knee: Could be from overuse, if in sports, or arthritis either osteo or autoimmune depending on age. rarely infection ( would be very hot) or Lyme. Could try motrin like products/ aleve if not allergic, kinesiotape, if you work on your knee like tiling etc use knee pads. Follow up with orthopedist.
