Not recommended: Children's cold medication not recommended for the under 6 yo crowd. Instead give honey 1 tsp every 4 -6 hours for cough.

Cold medicine: Check with your pediatrician first: depends if she has any other medical issues. (Also note: Avoid raw honey intake in children under 12 months of age given risk of Clostridium bacteria)

Is it better for children to get chicken pox than the chicken pox vaccine?

Dr. Sharon Gilliland
Pediatrics 36 years experience
No: Wild virus chicken pox does carry a risk of complications. In young children, the risk is lower than it is in teens and adults; however, the complications include the potential for life-threatening conditions. Never expose your child purposely to chicken pox. The vaccination is much safer.

Do thumb-sucking and pacifiers ruin children's teeth and bites?

Dr. Marcus Degraw

Yes: There is truly a lot of variables in this question - i.e. How much does the child use a pacy of suck their thumb per day, but for the most part these habits are devastating to teeth. Not only do I see this every day in my office, but I have a child who sucks her thumb and see the devastation to her teeth every day.

Insect bites: It could be any insect bite. See the doctor if it does not clear up in few days. If it is itchy you can try Hydrocortisone cream and Benadryl (diphenhydramine) by mouth.
A 25-year-old female asked:

My 1month old baby has gurgling sound when she breathes, its like she has phlegm, but she doesn't have cough or cold, its worst at night what could it be?

1 doctor answer1 doctor weighed in
Dr. Sabina Ben-Zion
Pediatrics 20 years experience
Can be normal: Babies often have a congested sound because they breathe through their nose and can't blow their noses. Your baby may also have some milk/formula in back of throat that she is not clearing or coughing like adults would. As long as your baby is not having labored breathing, and it is not interferring with her eating or sleeping, treat it as just a noise.
