Vaseline: Large studies of ointments on sutures indicate no benefit from neosporin or bacitracin. They fail to prevent infection. They are common sensitizers, among the most common things causing allergic reactions. Throw them away. Lubricate the wound with vaseline or Aquaphor and rinse with water twice a day.

Keep it clear: A topical antibiotic ointment may help suppress the local skin germs but not Vaseline. The best way to help is to visualize the area a couple times a day and keep it clean. If it starts to drain or become thickened/red contact the doc. 5-7 days is routine in facial wounds to reduce the appearance of "railroad track scarring" that could occur if they stay too long.
