My baby niece died on monday of sids. her mother smoked spice regularly and breastfed and i was wondering if it had anything to do with her death.

Spice: Spice is so called synthetic marijuana- a designer drug with unknown chemicals sprayed onto chopped plant material. It is unclear what the potential effects of spice may be on the breastfeeding infant. SIDS is a diagnosis of exclusion- meaning all other factors have been ruled out before making the diagnosis. SIDS also associated with second hand tobacco smoke and sleeping on stomach.

Maybe, but...: It is hard to tell what factors lead to SIDS in a particular baby. Smoking, alcohol abuse, and drug abuse each increases the chance that a parent's baby will die of SIDS. For example, looking at 1000 babies whose parents do not smoke nor abuse drugs/alcohol, only 1 will die of SIDS. If we look at 1000 babies whose parents smoke, we'll find that 3 babies die of SIDS... so there are 2 extra deaths.
