does wearing earbud headphones create excessive earwax and possible blockage? if so, would you not recommend using them?

If they push wax in: Some people have the type of ear wax that builds up, while others do not. Some people "clean" their ears but unintentionally are pushing their wax further in. Wax is oily and more liquid in some people and doesn't form a big lump, but wax is dry and hard in other people (forming a lump)... these qualities are genetic. If using earbuds and worried about wax, one's doctor can check 1-2 times a year.
