Cramping pain w IUD: Cramping pain after IUD insertion can last several weeks. You can expect to have some cramping and spotting (on and off bleeding or brown discharge) in the first few months, especially in the first two weeks and sometimes lasting as long as six months. Take ibuprofen or acetaminophen for the cramps.

A few hours to days: The IUD is a foreign body and does work by triggering an inflammatory response inside your uterus which may last a few hours to 1 or 2 days. A trial of a nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug(NSAID) like ibuprofen or anaprox may offer you relief. If the cramping pain persists, you may need to be reevaluated by your Gyn (to rule out undiagnosed infection, misplacement of the IUD or other issue)
