A member asked:

4 months after mitral valve repair ejection fraction of 45 - 50% is this considered below normal or expected after this kind of surgery?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Low normal: Normal EF is 55% or better. Yours is low normal. MV repair is done for severe Mitral Regurgitation (leaking) and the consequence of long term MR is weakening of the heart muscle, so an EF <55% is very common. In about 1/2 of cases, the EF will normalize over the next 6-12 months. So stay the course and repeat your echo at 12 months. You should be on lisinopril/carvedilol to maximize recovery.
