No: The IUD by itself has a failure rate of less than 1%/yr in most studies.Some providers suggest a backup BC plan for the first weeks of any new method, but the effectiveness of an IUD is almost immediate.Condoms may provide an initial benefit of reducing STD transfer.You may want to consider lambskin condoms since they differ so much from the synthetics.
