Scoliosis: The most common cause of asymmetry of the thoracic cavity and rib cage I see daily in my practice is a malalignment of the spine due to scoliosis or kyphoscoliosis. This makes common sense. If there is a curve in the dorsal or thoracic spine it will cause the pectoral girdle and even the pelvis to be asymmetric. The ribs originate from the thoracic spine and scoliosis alters their alignment.
