Why?: both are the same, and you stand a good chance of developing bad side effects, CNS/respiratory depression even if spaced out during the day. I don't see any reason for combining both drugs, besides either can easily interact with other medications you are on, confer with your doctor/prescriber, best wishes

One or the other?: I suppose I would ask why would one want to take both in one day? Either one or the other should suffice.
