Ask surgeon & anesth: This question's best answered by the anesthesiologist who will be attending on the surgery, as he/she is the one who decides the anesthetic care plan. Depending on the anesthesiologist's training, a peripheral or epidural nerve block can be given (in which case you may be awake), or general anesthesia (with gas mask) may be used. You need to be otherwise healthy for the latter. Ur surgeon may know
