Yes, he can: The mouth and throat can be infected with HSV2 by oral sex. Of course he also is at risk of genital herpes by intercourse. He can have a blood test: if already pos for HSV2, he is immune and won't catch it again. If negative or not tested, reduce his risk by no sex during outbreaks, consistent condoms for vaginal sex, and you taking anti-HSV treatment continuously, e.g. valacyclovir once daily.
