It's no mystery: Even with genital HSV2, which is more transmissible by sex than HSV1, most partners of people with genital herpes don't catch it themselves. With HSV1, genital-genital transmission is even rarer, because of infrequent asymptomatic viral shedding. The risk to your partner isn't zero, but it will remain low if you avoid sex during outbreaks (which usually are infrequent with genital HSV1).
