These agents, termed: proton pump inhibitors, reduce top 2/3 stomach lining secretion (under brain control) of hydrochloric acid & have turned out to be fairly safe, widely used OTC for decreasing esophageal acid symptoms, GERD (not the reflux) yet also leave individuals potentially more susceptible to food poisoning from bacteria in food eaten which would otherwise be unable to reproduce in higher acid concentrations.
