Polycythemia vera: Your bone marrow is over-producing red blood cells. Because of that your blood can get very viscous (gooey?) and can clog up in small vessels, say in the brain or lungs and thus cause small infarcts or strokes. So every once in a while you will have to be bled to reduce the number of red blood cells in your blood stream. It is the opposite of anemia(too few RBCs).
