Your prescription: Your eyeball is not a perfect mathematical sphere. As light comes from the outside it refracts through your lens to get back to your retina and thense to your brain. When the doc kept on putting different lenses in front of your eyes and asked you which was clearer he was experimenting with different lenses to get the "right" fit for your defective eyes. That's just a code. Review your physics!
