Usually moist heat: If there is a swelling I tend to prefer to use ice packs to shrink down the blood vessels thereby reducing the further loss of fluid . For pain I advise to use heat since this will expand the blood vessels and bring in more fresh blood and remove the pain products by increasing the circulation

It really: Depends on what works best for you. I like cold to help with inflammation but heat can also be helpful with some people.
