Depends on cause: Lingering cough could be sign of lung irritation from virus, or even chronic infection by bacteria (bronchitis or pneumonia). These can also lead to asthma/wheezing. Allergies, reflux of acid from stomach, smoking, heart problems and some medications can also cause. If lingering, should see doctor. If with colored phlegm, fever, pain, difficulty breathing, or blood, you should see more urgently.
