Several weeks: Your cough can remain for several weeks. Things to watch is a cough the is productive on bloody sputum or discolored sputum with persistent fever. Shortness of breath or chest pain which if it should occur will require you to seek care at your local emergency department.

Depends: If you are a smoker the cough can last awhile. The virus can cause destruction of the upper airway and it takes time to heal. Try hot tea/honey to help soothe the irritated airways. If you don't like tea - take a tablespoon of honey with sips of hot water. Sleep with a cool mist humidifier at night. Suck on butterscotch candies thru day.See your MD if not better soon.

Coughin'ToTheCoffin: Yeah. Can be a frustrating mess. If you are a normally healthy person you should get over the flu in about a week. Two tops. But...that cough can set-in and persist, sort of like a rash that keeps itching, so you may need a strong prescription cough medicine so the lung tissues can settle down. But--if you're still coughing-up junk and feel lousy you should be evaluated in person by a doctor
