Venous insufficiency: Either poor function of the deep or superficial veins of the leg can cause swelling and redness/purple coloring, when this is associated with swelling. The simplest treatment is compression stockings, but if the deep veins are blocked they can be stented. The superficial veins can be treated with an office procedure (laser or radiofrequency ablation).
