OnlyMeans NotPerfect: Focus. Values=magnification, in diopters, which examiner felt were effective to compensate focus (from what you said: clearer vs. less clear) & better read characters. The Phoropter used to arrive at values=simply an arrangement of lenses (quickly changeable glasses, if you will) used, trial & error, to rapidly check what worked better at time checked. Spherical=overall; cylinder+axis=astigmatism.
