A member asked:

Is altered conscious or coma do to encephalitis guaranteed to be permanent? or can a person possibly regain consciousness again once swelling clears?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Depends: When the inflammation of an encephalitis is bad enough to induce coma, it is serious & the outcome uncertain. However, with some infectious agents the swelling will eventually clear & normal or near normal function is possible. From that aspect recovery depends on how much actual brain injury is triggered by the germ.If it is just swelling and that is aggressively managed damage may be minimal.
