Pregnancy hormones: cause significant enlargement of the breast with growth of mammary glands, the areola and nipple tissue. Much of this recedes after birth of the infant, but not to prepregnancy status. Not all women, however, have elongated nipples. Some women do have inverted nipples or are quite flat and do not change significantly with pregnancy.
