A member asked:

Where the diagnosis is unclear, are anti-enterocyte antibodies useful to distinguish between aie and coeliac sprue ? what else can be tested for?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

New diagnosis: Adult autoimmune enteropathy is an emerging diagnosis and so far is considered very rare. Nobody really knows what to make of the welter of antibodies against gut epithelium, how reliable the labs are, or whether getting relief from the diarrhea by long-term immunosuppression is key. Celiac sprue is clear-cut. Crohn's and Whipple's, and don't overlook food / lactose intolerance.
