Lower the pressure: as the pain stopped when you moved to another area, it is more likely to be pain from mechanical pressure of the water stream, try less pressure. I pain persist or you get redness, swelling, or pain on pressure on the gums see dentist for advise

Make adjustments: It is possible that the pressure is too high on the waterpik or that you are holding it too close to your gums. However, your gums could also be inflamed. Be sure to see your dentist regularly for hygiene appointments.

Inflamed: This could be sign of gingivitis which is inflammation of the gums. If it persists or you have more issues, see your dentist. Also possible that you had small piece of food stuck just under the gums.
