Pryidium: Im on pyridium for a uti i know it says it will turn your urine orange but when i went this morning it was more like dark red like blood is this norm? ANS: the more concentrated your urine is the more red/orange it will be. I would take picture of it and send to your team and see what they see. Eating beets or drinking beet juice can also give red urine that looks like blood but is beeturia.

A 45-year-old member asked:

Is it true that pregnant women are not allowed to be blood donors?

Dr. Nicholas Fogelson

Yes: We do not consider it safe for a pregnant woman to donate blood. Blood volume increases dramatically over the course of pregnancy in order to support proper fetal circulation. The loss of blood from the system would likely be tolerated, but the system is not designed for that. Given the potential risks and the lack of anything to be gained, blood donation is not allowed during pregnancy.

Numbers are numbers: Lab results are numbers, and numbers are just numbers. They have little meaning without looking at the whole person. Low hemoglobin, hematocrit, and red blood cell counts means blood cells are not being made fast enough, are being lost (through bleeding), are being broken up, or any combination of such problems. Glucose goes up from increased body stress, inadequate insulin, I.V. Glucose, etc....

Yes: Vaginal penetration by the penis will not induce infection simply because your partner has a uti.

A 20-year-old female asked:

I had UTI and while I was getting treated I was bleeding a lot, like a normal period, but is that normal? I had my period a week before I had uti.

No: Treating a UTI should not cause vaginal bleeding. Sometimes a UTI can cause some blood in your urine but it is usually not heavy. It is possible the symptoms felt like a UTI but were from some other cause.
