3 gms/day: Is needed to lower LDL the bad cholesterol. Hdl or good cholesterol can be improved with 1-1.5 gms/day. Recently published studies have shown no benefical effect of taking Niacin on heart health.

Vit B3 & cholesterol: Yes, works great to reduce bad and raise good cholesterol. Dose is 400mg or more. Should watch liver tests and watch for muscle pain side effect. "no flush" Niacin does not work -different compound. Side effect of Niacin is flushing. Take slow release to reduce flushing and precede 20 minutes with 2 81mg aspirins to reduce flushing. Flushing is harmless - just uncomfortable. Duracin is one brand.
