Muscular most likely: The most likely cause is myofascial or muscular pain. It is possible that certain positions you might be sleeping in could be the cause of your pain. If you are experiencing any numbness/tingling or weakness it is possible it is a pinched nerve in the neck. If you're not having any of these nerve symptoms, I would suggest trying different pillows. Suggest trying to roll a towel for neck support.

Pinched nerve: Sounds like a pinched nerve in the neck, which can occur sometimes without any injury or trauma. Don't hesitate to be seen for it.
