See your doctor: To make sure your cough is not something ominous. And quit smoking.

Stop smoking: Cigarette smoke paralyzes the microcilia (brush-like hairs) in the upper respir tract which help sweep out foreign material. If you then combine that with damage from the virus causing the cold it may be a very long time before your cough ends. In addition you can develop bronchitis and copd. In men I have found the only thing that makes sense about quitting is that cigs will make it limp.

COugh: If no fever, steam treatment (over hot water in a sink with a towel) for 10 minutes 3 x a day today, drink a gallon of water today. If better-- then add mucinex (guaifenesin). If not see doc for possible small dose Prednisone for 2-3 days to calm inflammation of throat. Stop smoking-- see an addiction specialist to help.
