Check for pregnancy: dark coloration of nipple and areola in not unusual, the most common causes include pregnancy, breast feeding, menstruation etc I suggest you do a pregnancy test, and if negative to have it repeated after a week or two

Your boyfriend's: theory is interesting but very unlikely. Increased pigment of the nipples may be caused by hormonal changes but not by weather changes. Increased pigment of the face, nipples and the middle of the lower abdomen can be caused by the hormonal chances associated with pregnancy. Dr. Anne
