Medical examination: You need a medical examination by your primary care doctor who may also order some tests to check for the likely reasons for the pain in your foot. Gout is one condition which can affect your big toe and make it swell up and become painful. This requires a blood tests and X-rays may also be indicated. But you must first go see a doctor soon.
