It depends: It depends upon the cause of death. Some people are completely aware until the last moment. Others go into an unconscious state hours to days before they die and are probably not aware of what is going on around them. However, we do not totally understand what people are aware of in that state so we always encourage family to talk to them as if they could hear and understand.
