Not necessarily: You can ask your physician to have it removed and sometimes depending on the location you may have to see a specialist. Infection is always a risk, but it's not necessarily something that always happens.

Perhaps: It may work itself out of the skin. Try soaking in warm soapy water. If it does not surface go to doctor for removal

Possibly: a foreign body penetrating the out layer and deeper layers of the skin can possibly lead to an infection. Splinter must be removed and tetanus status checked. Antibiotics can also be considered, depending on depth and length of time it has been present.

Possibly: It really depends on what the splinter is made of and was it contaminated or not? A splinter can be considered a foreign body and a nidus for infection. I would attempt removal and see your physician. If there was continued pain, redness, and drainage immediate attention is necessary.

It's possible: If you cannot safely remove the foreign body by yourself, get professional help. Please see a General Practitioner or seek treatment at an Urgent Care location.

Inflamed: Infected---not always Inflamed--- usually Most splinters, in time, work up and out of the skin......but it is fastest to remove it with surgical instruments.
