Probably: It is not unusual to have pain 3 weeks after open hernia repair. The burning you feel could be the nerve and his too can be normal in the first few weeks. Both should be improving rather than worsening. If either of these are worsening or not improving over the next few weeks see your surgeon.

Yes: The lump under the skin is called a healing ridge, it's basically scar tissue that forms around the hernia repair. Is usually worse if mesh was used to repair the hernia (as it almost always is). This tends to get better over a period of months, but occasionally further surgery is needed. There is a small nerve in the area that is probably being irritated by the healing tissue, causing the burning
