Spontaneous bruising: There are rare conditions such as Gardner Diamond syndrome (autoerythrocyte sensitisation), Dercum disease, lipedema and others that have been associated with painful spontaneous bruising or bruising with minimal injury. Full history and coagulation work up may be necessary, so see your doctor for evaluation.

Many possibilities: One cause of finger bruising that is painful is Achenbach syndrome, a benign self-limiting condition of sudden unexplained bruising of the hand or fingers. Often accompanied by blisters, It is more common in women and the middle and index fingers are most affected. Other common causes of bruising are: medications such as aspirin or blood thinners, steroids, supplements such as fish oil or garlic, bleeding disorders such as Von Willebrand’s or thrombocytopenia ( low platelets) , liver diseases, Connective tissue disorders such as Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, Nutritional deficiencies such as low levels of vitamin B12, K, C, folic acid, allergic reactions, underlying infection involving blood vessels, cancers, lupus or other autoimmune diseases. An less common cause of spontaneous painful bruises is a rare condition called Autoerythrocyte sensitization syndrome (painful bruising syndrome) is marked by spontaneous and painful bruising, without any biological abnormality, occurring in women and thought to be a “mind body” manifestation of emotional stress.
