Waking up with a: blue tongue is unusual. Staining by something you ate (food) or ingested (medication) and unrecognized injury are common, but not serious, causes. Most causes, however, ARE related, in one way or another, to deoxygenation. Since blue tongue may be a sign of something serious, you should see a doctor if the cause isn't apparent or if it persists over the next 24 hours.
